Experiences in Umphang Trekking: One of the best places for trekking in Thailand is in the northwest near Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Through the area runs the Mae Klong River and the beautiful countryside is ideal for trekking and bamboo rafting. The scenery along the river is a wonderful selection of limestone cliffs, waterfalls, wild orchids and giant teak trees. On the rafting you can enjoy the song of many birds and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of gibbons, snakes and giant lizards. The trip through the jungle leads us to southeast Asia’s largest waterfall Tee Loi Su (400 meters high), where you can enjoy a refreshing dip if the water level permits this. We spend a few nights in the Karen village of Kho Ta, where it is possible to get a fascinating insight into their lives and culture.
Day 1: Bangkok – Mae Sot
We meet at New Road Guesthouse pm. 20:00, where we take the bus terminal and proceed with VIP luxury bus to Mae Sot.
Day 2: Mae Sot – Umphang (breakfast / lunch / dinner)
In Mae Sot, we are picked by Mr. Lar and have the opportunity to sleep a few extra hours on a mattress in his House. After breakfast and a shower, he takes us on a short trip to the Burmese border market on the river Moi. After lunch, we use a local Songthaew (pick-up truck) to Umphang along with locals. It is a very beautiful trip, about 4 hours through the mountains – and 1,219 curves! (If you suffer from motion sickness this is a good time to take some medication). Accommodation for the night will be Mr. T’s traditional house.
Day 3: Rafting & Trekking (breakfast / lunch / dinner)
After breakfast we do some bamboo rafting (or dinghy in the rainy season – depending on water level). After bamboo rafting trek we have about 3-4 hours trek to the camp in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, where guides will put the tents up and then make dinner for us.
Day 4: Trekking & Tee Loi Su Waterfall (breakfast / lunch / dinner)
After breakfast we will take a trip to the impressive waterfall Tee Loi Su which is Southeast Asia’s largest waterfall. Afterwards we walk through the bamboo forest, across bridges and through the dense jungle to the Karen village of Ko Tha where we spend the night in a traditional house.
Day 5: Elephant trekking (breakfast / lunch / dinner)
After breakfast we go out riding on elephant through the jungle. The journey takes about 3-4 hours. If you feel like it you can ask your mahout (elephant trainer) if you may try to control the elephant. Attention! It is normal and necessary for Mahouts to pull the elephant with a bamboo stick during the trip. Back in Umphang, you can take a shower before heading back to Mae Sot. Depart on your own from Mae Sot to Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.
