When you arrive on Koh Lanta with the ferry you will be met by a fantastic view of both gorgeous beaches and jungle covered mountains. The largest mountain is more than 500 meters high and the island is covered with thick rainforest where you find monkeys and many other animals.
On the island today live around 24.000 inhabitants, most of whom are occupied with tourism, fishing and rubber production.
Koh Lanta is about 30 km long and 10 km wide and you will only find one roadway that follows the coastline at the east- and west coast. It is not possible to go around the island as the road end in the south on the east- and west coast. But you can cross the island two places on the middle of Koh Lanta.
The most special place on the island is the village called Saladan in the north end of Koh Lanta. Saladan must be experienced. The atmosphere is completely relaxed and you will find many good seafood restaurants, together with many difference shops.
The actual island of Koh Lanta lies in the Krabi province, which lies close to Phuket. From Koh Lanta it is very easy to travel to the nearby islands such as Phi Phiand Phuket with daily ferries from Saladan.
