Orchids are plants that are members of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). The rare orchid Gastrodia exilis is just one of the many orchids found in Thailand's rainforests. Orchids are known for the often very beautiful flowers and, for some types, a very long lifespan.

Denmark has played an important role in the exploration of Thailand’s orchids. There is a large collection of Thai orchids in Copenhagen at the Botanical Museum, the Botanical Garden, and the Botanical Institute. One of the major driving forces behind the collections were Gunnar Seidenfaden (1908-2001), who was ambassador to Thailand in the fifties and throughout life studied and named countless orchids in Thailand and region.

Elephants & Orchids

In the lush tropical jungle of Chiang Mai Maesa Valley lives a large family of elephants alongside their "mahout". Maesa Elephant Camp is a camp which has one of the largest collections of elephants in Northern Thailand.

Maesa Elephant Camp's philosophy is to create a natural and healthy environment for the elephants while working to conserve and breed them, due to the dwindling number of Asian elephants left in the wild.

Poor maintenance will usually lead to poor health, so the Maesa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai is very aware that elephants are ensured the best sanitary conditions, optimal nutrition, and treatment of elephants so they strong both mentally and physically.
