Evolution Tour supports a school project on Koh Chang (Thailand)
If you look carefully as you travel around Koh Chang you will notice collections of tin-roofed shacks hidden away from the main tourist areas. The temporary dwellings are home to several thousand Cambodian construction and manual workers. Cambodian labor provides the core of almost all hotels, resorts and other building project that occur on the island. Thailand is a very wealthy country compared to its neighbors Laos, Burma and Cambodia and in the country as a whole there are several million migrant workers from these nations. Due to the extreme poverty of the conditions from where they come these migrants are prepared provisions for the licensing of migrant labor but these are often ignored to workers frequently work illegally with no rights and no protection such as minimum wage. Therefore the Cambodian workers offer a cheap source of labor. The going rate for a day’s work is around 100 THB or less than 3 Euros. So workers flock to Koh Chang from Cambodia, often bringing their families with them. This is a problem since during the long days that their parents work these kids must either stay with them on dangerous construction sites or stay alone and unprotected in temporary housing . They aren’t entitled to education through the Thai school system so they also go without education.
Wouldn’t it the great if someone were to make the lives of these kids a bit better? Luckily Proudly Open Minded has led to the construction of a school for the kids. Some land has been leased near to Klong Prao and the building of a school has been completed in March 2009. - – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – - The goals of the project are to provide the following: - – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – - The main sponsor of the project is Proudly Open Minded (BAS Group Netherlands). Evolution Tour on Koh Chang and Asien Travel in Denmark has kindly offered to help to provide daily meal for the kids and also to assist with some of the project administration. Mr. Apipanpong Ubonmuang (Khun Uan) has also assisted with bringing the scheme to completion. And of course any assistance that you could provide would be very gratefully received. They will need a lot of basic school supplies such as pens, papers, rulers, etc. For donation such as these can be left at an office of Evolution Tour in Klong Prao.
